The best leaders lead themselves first. They realize that knowing who they are, what their values are and how to hold themselves to higher standards is a critical first step in leading others. I’ve had the privilege of working with several amazing leaders and a few not-so-amazing leaders throughout the years. Here’s a little insight into what I’ve observed in the workplace.
It’s easy to be a lousy leader:
- Your decisions sway as the wind blows
- You get to preach the motto “do as I say not as I do”
- You get to use your role as a source of power
- You take the credit and look for others to blame
It’s more of a challenge to be a great leader:
- You make strategic decisions that are aligned with your values and the values of the organization
- You are disciplined
- You lead with integrity and example
- You give others the glory yet you are accountable when things go south
Did you know most leaders overestimate their ability to lead? How can you know how you are doing? First, look at your results and your relationships. Maybe a little self-reflection is in order. Are your actions and decisions aligned with who you are and the person you strive to be? Maybe a vulnerable conversation with a team member or coworker could help you out.
