This time of year has many of us de-cluttering the closets and cleaning out the garage. If we don’t deal with the physical clutter, we may end up on an episode of reality tv.

What about the mental clutter? The impact of mental baggage may impact us more negatively than our physical space, yet we rarely spend time dealing with it. Let’s take a look at what has to go…

Mental clutter interferes with our ability to live up to our potential. Sometimes, we haven’t even acknowledged that these things exist, so it takes a little reflection to figure out what we might need to work on.

Here are 5 kinds of mental clutter that might be obstacles to your success.

Guilt: Get rid of guilt. Ask for forgiveness. Make choices that align with your values and your dreams and don’t let guilt interfere.

Resentment: It’s been said that harboring resentment is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to get sick. The only person it hurts is you, not your co-worker, not your family member.

Blame: When we are being 100% accountable for our choices, our happiness and our attitude, there is no room for blame.

Regret: The past is the past; you only have control over the choices you make now and in the future. You can still apologize, you can still ask for forgiveness. You just can’t undo it.

Worry: We spend a lot of time and energy worrying about things we cannot control. What if we put that energy to better, more productive use?

Do a little inventory. Do a little cleaning out. You’ll be glad you did.
